It should be a better future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat libraries have always done\u2014preserve, lend, interoperate\u2014is now being challenged.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>He emphasized that in the face of licensing restrictions and eroding control, the very identity of libraries is at stake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83e\uddf0 Let Libraries Be Libraries<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lila Bailey<\/strong> recounted the genesis of the four digital rights and how librarians globally came together in a moment of existential reflection:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cEverybody deserves access to high quality information that libraries and other memory institutions have been collecting for generations.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>She reminded listeners why the call to action is urgent:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWinter is coming&#8230;Winter&#8217;s kind of here when we&#8217;re thinking about access to information.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\uddf7\ud83c\uddf8 <strong>From Belgrade to the World: A Simple Document, a Global Movement<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Adam Sofronijevi\u0107<\/strong> shared the emotional core of the campaign:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cLet this world not be our doom, but our hope. By preserving our rights&#8230; we will be able to expand all those beautiful things that digital tools are promising us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen winter comes, the temperature falls down. What we can do is huddle together to give us more warmth.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>His message: the power of unity and simplicity in a world bracing for digital disruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\uddea\ud83c\uddfa <strong>Digital Fairness for Libraries: A European Call to Action<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Caroline De Cock<\/strong> called out the quiet crisis in how memory institutions are being hollowed out by licensing regimes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe are shifting to a model where [libraries] are basically seeing their collections disappear. Like Snapchat stories.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>At the LIBER Conference, she found a community ready to act:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cMemory institutions are facing a situation that has never been more critical in terms of being able to fulfill their mission in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>And she pointed to Europe\u2019s unique role in protecting digital rights:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cEurope has a tradition of trying to protect the little guy. We are into that\u2014that\u2019s our thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udcd6 <strong>The Global Voice of Libraries<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stephen Wyber<\/strong> spoke to the power of collective voice and institutional alignment in the face of digital challenges and the nearly hundred year of IFLA advocacy on these matters:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWhat we&#8217;ve really seen is a deregulation by stealth: quietly, little bit by bit, all of the protections, all of the balancing factors that were in place have been undermined.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The importance of talking about rights: (&#8230;) things that are as important as the preservation of our history, access to information for accountability for reproducibility, when we&#8217;re talking about access for research, for education, it&#8217;s crazy that we should call these exceptions. These should be the rule!\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udf34 <strong>Preserving a Nation\u2019s Memory\u2014Digitally<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Peter Scholing<\/strong> reflected on the foundational partnership that launched the campaign and why small nations play a big role in preserving digital heritage:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote alignleft is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s a shared purpose in getting the information you want to share out there, and there&#8217;s a lot of barriers to information (&#8230;) So it&#8217;s just our way of contributing to that conversation and sharing with worlds that we&#8217;re about sharing the information.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Raymond Hernandez <\/strong>added:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cBy putting this together in the collection, we can make it possible not only for us Arubians to get this information but also for all our diaspora living around the world. (&#8230;) the signing was a kind of expression that it is not only about cultural equity but also about making sure our communities are not left out of the digital future.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udf0d <strong>What\u2019s Next: From Signing to Sustaining a Movement<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Closing thoughts from <strong>Adam<\/strong> and <strong>Caroline<\/strong> made it clear: this isn\u2019t just a petition. It\u2019s a catalyst.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThis campaign is a merger of the best America and Europe can provide to each other.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\">\u2013 <em>Adam Sofronijevi\u0107<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThis is not just signing a statement.
